Breakfast at Tiretti Bazar

Opening at 5am , Tiretti Bazar is a paradise for every food lover Kolkata’s Old Chinatown or Terreti Bazaar is one of the city’s key attractions for visitors. As the only Chinatown of this kind in India, Terreti Bazaar safeguards a slice of Kolkata’s unique cultural heritage – that of the local Chinese immigrant community.

Tiretti bazar is located in Sunyet Sen Street.

Having decided that we had to go to Tiretti, and having spent an entirely sleepless night in eager anticipation and the fear that we might miss the market if we doze off, my travel buddy and I reached there sharp at 7 in the morning.

My first impression of Tiretti Bazar was the aroma of various different kinds of amazing chinese street foods! From fresh steaming dumplings to fishball soups, breaded pork chops, rice and sesame seed sweet balls, sticky rice and even chicken pies, the place serves authentic Chinese fare that are not only lovingly made by home-cooks but are also amazingly tasty as well .

Of all the things Kolkata’s iconic Old Chinatown is known for, the impressive variety of mouthwatering street food must be the most significant. The most popular items you will find here are momos or dumplings stuffed with beef, pork, chicken, seafood or vegetables. These are either steamed and served with clear soup or fried to a crisp and served with a sauce. Hearty, delicious and made with love, momos are among Kolkata’s finest street foods.

pork momo

There were small shops with each an every individual trying to sell their own delicacies. I naturally was very confused on where to start from so I started from what I know. Momos. But not the usual one, I managed to get a pork momo and man did that taste amazing.

On asking the lady selling it, I almost understood that Chinese cuisine in Kolkata is a mixture of several cuisines from their native land including Sichuan, Cantonese as well as Bengali flavours.

Finally walking straight we found a man selling big looking momo kinda something. On enquiring we found out that its called a Bao or Baozi as many people call it. It is a type of yeast-leavened filled bun in various Chinese cuisines. There are many variations in fillings and preparations, though the buns are most often steamed.

With not yet satisfied and wanting to try more and more (also 'coz we both skipped breakfast this) we moved to the next stall. It was much more crowded finally on asking we got to try fish ball soup and chicken wontons

As we explored further, we saw pork sausages were being sold. I loved the taste of pork and so packed some pork sausages for home as well. Later on we tried stuffed sweet bread which just turned our taste from savoury to sweet an thats what made us decide to go for something savoury again.

Our final try was pork Pork roll and pork chops and need I say that became my personal favourite.

So much that we took another plate and finally satisfied our trip to Tiretti Bazar.

In Tiretti Bazar there are many more other than just chicken bao and pork chops. Shu Mei, Sausages, Prawn wafers and the list goes endless.

If you live in Calcutta or came down to visit to Calcutta, do not miss out Tiretti Bazar. Period.
